Tatiana Schlossberg, the granddaughter of former US President John F. Kennedy and a respected climate journalist, has died at the age of 35. Her family confirmed the news through a statement shared by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation on social media, describing her as “our beautiful Tatiana,” adding that she would “forever remain in our hearts.”

The news has cast a shadow of grief over one of America’s most storied political families. Tatiana, daughter of writer and designer Edwin Schlossberg and US diplomat Caroline Kennedy, announced in November that she had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). In a candid essay titled “A Battle With My Blood” published last month, she revealed that doctors had told her she had less than a year to live. The diagnosis came shortly after the birth of her second child in May 2024.

Acute myeloid leukaemia, a fast‑progressing cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow, occurs when the marrow produces abnormal white blood cells that disrupt the body’s ability to form healthy blood components. Tatiana wrote openly about her treatment journey, including chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, but noted that medical experts could not offer an optimistic prognosis.

She reflected deeply on her family in the essay, writing: “My first thought was my children — their faces feel permanently inside my eyelids. They will not remember me.” Her words captured a profound sense of loss, not only for herself but for the young family she leaves behind.

Tatiana also acknowledged her family’s long history of tragedy. President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas in 1963, and her uncle, John F. Kennedy Jr., died in a plane crash in 1999. She expressed sorrow that her own passing would add yet another painful chapter to that legacy.

Her younger brother, Jack Schlossberg, is currently campaigning for a congressional seat in New York — a sign that the family’s political involvement continues into a new generation.

Tatiana Schlossberg was known for her sharp writing on climate change, sustainability and environmental policy. She authored “Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know You Have,” a widely discussed work that explored how everyday choices contribute to global environmental strain. Her nuanced voice helped bring climate discourse to a younger generation, marking her as one of the most thoughtful emerging writers in the field.

In her final reflections, she wrote that she had always tried to be “a good student, a good sister, a good daughter.” Her passing, at such a young age, has been met with sorrow across journalistic and political circles — a promising life and voice cut short far too soon.
