Dhaka, 22 January 2026: Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 remains uncertain as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) grapples with an ultimatum from the International Cricket Council (ICC). The fate of the national side hangs in the balance following the board’s request to relocate its matches from India due to rising political tensions and security concerns.
The ICC, however, rejected Bangladesh’s request, citing comprehensive security assessments which reportedly found “no credible or verifiable threat” to the team. Officials further emphasised that altering the tournament schedule mere weeks before its commencement would “jeopardise the sanctity of ICC events.”
The ICC has reportedly given BCB a one-day deadline to confirm participation. Should Bangladesh refuse to travel to India, Scotland is poised to take their place in Group C.
| Scenario | Implication |
|---|---|
| Bangladesh confirms participation | Team competes as scheduled in India |
| Bangladesh declines | Scotland replaces Bangladesh in Group C |
| Deadline missed | ICC may enforce replacement automatically |
Bangladesh have been present in all editions of the T20 World Cup to date. Their best performance came in the 2024 edition, finishing 7th. A withdrawal from the 2026 tournament would mark the first time the country misses a global ICC event due to political or security concerns.
BCB President Aminul Islam stated, “I requested the ICC board for time to consult my government once more. They acknowledged the point and granted us 24 to 48 hours to respond. We are aware of security concerns in India and would prefer to play in Sri Lanka. Although the ICC has declined our request, we will speak with the government one final time and convey their feedback to the ICC.”
Reports suggest Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) supported Bangladesh’s stance during the ICC emergency board meeting. TelecomAsia quoted a PCB source:
“Pakistan supported Bangladesh on principle. India’s insistence previously led to Pakistan’s matches being moved to Dubai, yet Bangladesh’s similar concerns were dismissed. This is deeply disappointing.”
The national team awaits guidance as the situation develops. Bangladesh’s sports advisor, Asif Nazrul, is scheduled to meet the squad at 3 PM today to update them and gather their views.
Team captain Litton Das offered a cautious comment:
“It’s not safe for me to answer. Are you sure we’re going to the World Cup?”
The current tensions trace back to the controversial removal of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL KKR squad at the request of the BCCI. This incident led Bangladesh to cancel their India tour and halt IPL broadcasts in the country, further straining cricketing relations.
