National Flag Raised at Bogra Awami League Office

The political landscape in Bogra was momentarily unsettled on Monday afternoon as the national flag was spotted fluttering above the district headquarters of the Bangladesh Awami League. The symbolic act, occurring in the heart of the city’s Shatmatha district, has triggered an investigation by local law enforcement into the breach of the premises, which have remained largely dormant following the dramatic political shifts of the previous year.

The flag was first observed at approximately 4:30 pm on 16 February 2026, affixed to a makeshift plastic pole protruding from the second-floor balcony of the building. This specific site has remained a focal point of local political history, standing largely abandoned since the fall of the previous administration on 5 August 2024.

A Calculated Act of Clandestine Defiance

While witnesses initially remained silent regarding the identity of those responsible, the Bogra District Awami League subsequently claimed responsibility for the act via their official social media channels. The post served as a bold assertion of the party’s continued presence in the region.

“Our party activists have hoisted the national flag at the Bogra District Awami League office. We cannot be suppressed,” the post declared, invoking the resilient rhetoric associated with the party’s historical identity.

The placement of the flag was strategically chosen, situated on the boundary between the Awami League suite and the neighbouring office of the Bangladesh Students’ Union. Despite the central location, business owners in the vicinity claimed to have seen nothing of the installation process, suggesting a swift operation designed to avoid immediate confrontation.

Chronological Sequence of Events

The following table highlights the timeline of the incident as reported by local sources and regional officials:

Time Event Observations
09:00 am CPB Programme Communist Party members present; no flag visible.
04:30 pm First Discovery National flag spotted flying from the second floor.
06:00 pm Digital Claim Awami League Facebook page claims responsibility.
07:00 pm Official Confirmation CPB District President notes the flag’s presence.
08:30 pm Removal The flag is taken down by unidentified individuals.

Administrative Response and Regional Context

The building in Shatmatha houses the offices of several diverse political entities, including the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB). Aminul Farid, the CPB District President, remarked that his team was in the building until 4:00 pm for a party programme and noted that the façade remained clear until that point. “It is likely that members of the Awami League exploited a brief window of absence to affix the flag,” he observed, suggesting that the act was carried out away from the public eye.

The local authorities were caught off guard by the development. Md. Ataur Rahman, Additional Superintendent of Police and media spokesperson for Bogra District Police, stated that the department had no prior intelligence regarding the incident. “We are currently investigating the matter to identify those who entered the facility and to determine if any protocols regarding the national flag or trespassing were violated,” he told reporters.

The flag was reportedly removed by 8:30 pm, yet the incident has served as a provocative reminder of the underlying political tensions simmering in the northern districts.
