Bangladesh’s men’s futsal team registered an emphatic 5-1 triumph over Sri Lanka in the South Asian Futsal Championship, held in Thailand on Tuesday. The victory came in the team’s fourth group-stage match, reinforcing Bangladesh’s credentials as serious contenders in the tournament.
The first half saw a competitive contest, with Bangladesh taking a 2-1 lead thanks to a brace from captain Rahbar Khan. Sri Lanka had briefly equalised after the Bangladeshi goalkeeper, Rabbi, committed a foul just outside the penalty area. The resulting free-kick was expertly converted by the Sri Lankan captain, bringing the score to 1-1 before Rahbar’s double restored Bangladesh’s lead going into the interval.
In the second half, Bangladesh extended their dominance, scoring three more goals. The third goal was set up by Rahbar’s precise delivery, with Moin expertly placing the ball into the net from close range. In the final five minutes, Bangladesh added two more goals to seal the comprehensive win. In the dying moments, Abir struck a long-range effort from just outside the box, which found the net as the Sri Lankan goalkeeper was out of position.
The tournament features seven nations in both the men’s and women’s competitions. Each team plays six matches, with the side topping the points table after all fixtures declared champions. Bangladesh’s men have now won two of their four matches, drawn one, and lost one, while the women’s team remains unbeaten with two victories and a draw from three matches.
