Akhtar Hails Taskin, Nahid Among Top Fast Bowlers in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s pace bowling has seen significant improvement over the past few years, a fact recognised by cricket experts worldwide. This makes the visit of Pakistan’s legendary fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar all the more exciting. Known as the “Rawalpindi Express” and holder of the record for the fastest delivery in international cricket, Akhtar arrived in Dhaka last Sunday to take on the role of mentor for Dhaka Capitals in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

At a press conference in Banani, Dhaka, Akhtar spoke about his enduring love for Bangladesh and the appeal of mentoring the next generation. “Whenever I get the opportunity to return to Bangladesh, I take it. It’s my affection for the country, and I will never miss a chance to come here,” he said.

The conversation soon shifted to Bangladesh’s current pace attack. Akhtar singled out Taskin Ahmed, who will feature for Dhaka Capitals this BPL season. “Taskin bowls with full commitment, sharpness, and focus. It’s a pleasure to watch him,” he remarked. He also praised Nahid Rana, noting that both players have the potential to excel at the international level with proper training and guidance.

Akhtar elaborated on the essentials of fast bowling, emphasising fitness and mindset. “For Nahid, maintaining muscle strength and following a high-level training regime is key. Speed comes with a combination of physical fitness and mental attitude. Taskin and Nahid already show these qualities, which is promising,” he explained.

The former Pakistan pacer also ranked Bangladesh’s pace attack alongside the best in South-East Asia. “Nahid and Taskin are in this league, alongside Bumrah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Nasim Shah. Pakistan has other fast bowlers who bowl at high speeds, but these young Bangladeshis are impressive,” Akhtar said.

He praised recent performances by Bangladesh’s youngsters, noting their victory in the Pakistan series. “I was particularly impressed by Liton Das. They have the talent to create magic in the World Cup. In T20 cricket, Bangladesh can compete at the highest level,” he added.

Akhtar also commended Bangladesh’s pace bowling coach, Sean Tait. “Tait is one of the finest coaches. With him in charge, I’m not needed. My role is to inspire fans as a champion, but he should continue developing these bowlers,” Akhtar said.
