Due to security concerns, the Bangladesh cricket team will not be travelling to India for the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, the government has taken a different approach for the country’s shooting contingent. Bangladesh’s top shooter, Robiul Islam, accompanied by his coach Sharmin Akter, arrived in Delhi yesterday to participate in the Asian Shooting Championship.
Aleya Ferdous, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Shooting Federation, emphasised that the safety of the athlete and coach has been a top priority from the very beginning. “Our shooter and coach reached India yesterday safely. We have been in regular communication with the National Rifle Association of India and the Asian Shooting Federation. Every security measure has already been verified and coordinated,” she said.
Robiul Islam brings with him significant international experience. He represented Bangladesh at the Paris 2024 Olympics and has competed in a range of international tournaments both at home and abroad. Coach Sharmin Akter, a former star shooter herself, adds further confidence to the team’s preparations. Ferdous added, “Both are highly experienced athletes. They have participated in numerous overseas tournaments, and they are well-prepared to adapt to different situations and maintain focus under pressure.”
Robiul’s main event in the championship is scheduled for 5 February. Speaking from Delhi, he said, “So far, everything has been safe and normal. The immigration process was smooth, and both the hotel and shooting range facilities are very satisfactory. We have faced no problems or challenges, and the hospitality has been excellent.”
The federation has worked closely with local authorities to ensure that all necessary arrangements are in place for Robiul and Sharmin, allowing them to concentrate fully on their performance rather than logistical or safety concerns.
The following table summarises Robiul Islam’s participation in the upcoming event and highlights his prior achievements:
| Shooter | Event | Date | Location | International Experience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Robiul Islam | Asian Shooting Championship | 5 February | Delhi, India | Paris 2024 Olympics; multiple international tournaments |
Bangladesh’s representation in international shooting competitions continues to grow, with athletes like Robiul Islam leading the charge. The combination of his Olympic-level experience and Sharmin Akter’s guidance as coach is expected to strengthen Bangladesh’s prospects at the championship. The federation hopes that this participation will not only yield competitive results but also inspire emerging shooters to pursue excellence at international levels.
