Bangladesh’s Promising Start Derailed by Three Quick Wickets Before Lunch!

Bangladesh got off to a promising start on Day 1 of the Mirpur Test against Ireland on 19th November, with an opening partnership between Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Saadman Islam that gave the team hope for a strong innings. However, after breaking a half-century stand, the Tigers lost their rhythm and soon found themselves struggling. Following the dismissal of Saadman, Bangladesh’s star performers from the previous Test – Joy and captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto – both returned to the dressing room before the team reached the 100-run mark. Now, the onus was on Mushfiqur Rahim, playing in his 100th Test, to steady the ship alongside Mominul Haque.

Having won the toss and opted to bat first, Bangladesh were on track at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. However, they suffered a collapse just before lunch, having lost three key wickets and scored just 100 runs in 31 overs.

Saadman and Joy’s Solid Opening Stand
The opening pair of Saadman and Joy played steadily, adding 52 runs in 13.4 overs. However, it was McBrine, the Irish off-spinner, who made the breakthrough by trapping Saadman LBW. The decision was initially not given by the on-field umpire, but after a successful review by Irish captain Andrew Balbirnie, the dismissal was upheld. Saadman had faced 44 balls, scoring 35 runs with 6 boundaries.

Joy’s Sudden Slump and Captain Shanto’s Early Departure
Joy, who had been playing cautiously, suddenly went for a big shot and was caught by McBrine, becoming his second victim. Bangladesh’s second wicket fell at 82 runs, with Joy contributing 34 runs off 86 balls, including 2 fours.

Shanto, who had recently played a match-winning knock, was next to go. He managed to hit McBrine for a six, ending an 88-ball boundary drought for the Tigers. However, his joy was short-lived, as he was bowled out on the very next delivery, leaving Bangladesh at 95 for 3. Shanto, who had scored 8 runs off 11 balls, once again fell prey to McBrine’s spin.

Mushfiqur Rahim’s Crucial Role in His 100th Test
With three wickets down before lunch, the responsibility now rested on the experienced shoulders of Mushfiqur Rahim, who was playing his 100th Test match. He entered the crease in a difficult situation, with the team looking to recover from the early collapse. Joining him was Mominul Haque, who had narrowly missed out on a century in the previous Test. Mominul was batting on 17 runs from 29 balls, while Mushfiqur was still unbeaten on 3 runs from 18 balls.

As Bangladesh entered the lunch break, they would be hoping that their veteran duo could rebuild the innings and prevent further damage. However, with McBrine in form, and Ireland’s bowlers in the ascendancy, Bangladesh’s top-order struggles could set the tone for a difficult second session.

The first session had seen McBrine take all three wickets to fall, and Bangladesh would need to regroup quickly if they are to avoid further collapses in the coming hours.
