A luxury Bentley Continental was seized by the Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (JPJ) during a targeted enforcement exercise along Jalan Tun Razak after its owner admitted that the vehicle’s road tax and insurance had not been renewed for several years.

The incident occurred on 8 February during a Special Luxury Operation, an initiative aimed at monitoring high-value vehicles and ensuring compliance with Malaysian road transport laws. According to Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam, officers stopped the Bentley after identifying potential irregularities during routine checks.

Upon inspection, enforcement personnel discovered that the vehicle, which was registered in the driver’s own name, had not carried valid road tax or insurance coverage since 2018. Further checks also revealed that the woman driving the car did not possess a valid Competent Driving Licence (CDL) at the time of the stop.

In her statement to JPJ officers, the woman — described as an entrepreneur — claimed that the lapse was unintentional. She explained that administrative matters such as renewing road tax and insurance had previously been handled by family members, and that she had “overlooked” the responsibility in recent years. Despite this explanation, Hamidi stressed that responsibility for ensuring a vehicle’s legal compliance ultimately rests with the registered owner.

“Investigations confirmed that the road tax and insurance for the luxury vehicle had not been renewed since 2018,” Hamidi said in a statement released on Sunday. “The driver acknowledged the oversight but the offences remain subject to enforcement under existing law.”

As a result, the Bentley Continental was seized on the spot and will be held for further action under the Road Transport Act 1987. JPJ officials noted that such enforcement operations are not intended to target owners of luxury vehicles specifically, but rather to ensure that all road users — regardless of status or vehicle value — comply with legal requirements.

Hamidi added that JPJ will continue similar operations in key areas of the capital, particularly locations frequented by high-end vehicles, as part of broader efforts to improve road safety, reduce uninsured driving, and reinforce public confidence in enforcement fairness.

Offences Identified During the Inspection

Offence IdentifiedStatus at Time of StopRelevant Requirement

JPJ has reminded motorists that failure to maintain valid documentation not only exposes drivers to legal penalties but also poses significant financial and safety risks, particularly in the event of an accident involving uninsured vehicles.
