In a chilling act of targeted violence, a local official of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was assassinated in Jessore on Saturday evening. The victim, identified as 50-year-old Alamgir Hossain, was a prominent figure in local politics, serving as the Joint General Secretary of the BNP’s Ward No. 7 unit under the Jessore Municipality. The brazen attack, carried out in a public space, has sent shockwaves through the district and heightened political anxieties.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 pm on 3 January in the Shankarpur area of Jessore city. According to witnesses and family members, Alamgir was standing in front of the office of Nayan, a local councillor, engaged in casual conversation. It was at this moment that unidentified assailants approached and fired a single, lethal shot into the left side of his head before vanishing into the darkness of the surrounding alleyways.

Following the gunshot, panicked locals rushed to the scene to find Alamgir collapsed in a pool of blood. He was immediately transported to the emergency department of Jessore General Hospital. Dr Bichitra Mallik, the attending physician at the hospital’s emergency unit, confirmed the fatality upon arrival, noting that the victim had sustained a severe penetrating wound to the cranium which proved instantaneous.
The victim’s elder brother, Jahangir Hossain, expressed his devastation, noting that Alamgir had no known personal feuds that would warrant such a cold-blooded execution. BNP leadership in Jessore has strongly condemned the killing, suggesting that the “shadowy figures” and agents of the previous government still operating in the region may be targeting grassroots leaders to destabilize the current political transition.
Inspector Mominul Haque of the Jessore Kotwali Police Station confirmed that law enforcement has been deployed to the Shankarpur area to maintain order. “We have received reports of a targeted shooting of a BNP official on Ishak Road,” he stated. “Our forensic teams are currently at the site gathering evidence, and we have launched a district-wide manhunt to apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime.”
As the news of the assassination spread, local BNP activists gathered at the hospital and in the Shankarpur area, demanding a swift and transparent investigation. The murder adds to a burgeoning list of concerns regarding the safety of political workers in the region, with many calling for heightened security measures to prevent further “political cleansings” by remnants of the old order.
