In a tragic accident in Comilla’s Daudkandi area, a gas cylinder explosion resulting from a leakage left four members of the same family critically burned, including a young child. The victims have been identified as Monowara Begum (60), Zil Haque (37), Umme Humayra (30), and Hurraam (2).
The incident occurred early on Tuesday morning, 24 February, around 6:00 AM, when the family was reportedly in their home at the time of the explosion. Emergency responders swiftly rescued the injured and transported them to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute (NBPSI) for immediate medical attention.
Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, the resident surgeon at NBPSI, confirmed the admission of all four patients in a critical condition. According to hospital sources, the severity of burns varies among the victims, with Zil Haque and Umme Humayra sustaining extensive injuries.
| Name | Age | Burned Body Surface Area (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Monowara Begum | 60 | 2% |
| Zil Haque | 37 | 54% |
| Umme Humayra | 30 | 65% |
| Hurraam | 2 | 6% |
The family members were immediately stabilised in the emergency department, where medical staff initiated intensive care procedures. Dr. Rahman highlighted that while Monowara Begum and Hurraam sustained relatively minor burns, Zil Haque and Umme Humayra are facing life-threatening injuries due to the extensive coverage of burns on their bodies.
Hospital authorities are closely monitoring their conditions and have appealed for blood donations and additional support to ensure adequate treatment for the critically injured. The incident has sparked concern among local residents, many of whom emphasised the urgent need for safety measures to prevent gas-related accidents.
Preliminary reports suggest that a gas cylinder in the family’s kitchen leaked, leading to the sudden explosion. While investigations are ongoing, authorities have warned the public to handle gas appliances with care and to regularly inspect cylinders for potential leaks.
This unfortunate event highlights the dangers of domestic gas appliances when not maintained properly and serves as a stark reminder for families across the country to prioritise household safety.
