The death toll from a rapidly escalating Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has exceeded 1,700, according to the latest government figures reported by Al Jazeera.
Since the outbreak was officially declared on May 15, a total of 3,802 people have been infected. The current crisis is driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, with official data confirming 1,707 fatalities to date. In addition, health authorities are actively monitoring more than 17,000 individuals who were in close contact with infected patients.
Record Spread and Lack of Approved Treatments
This surge marks the second-largest and fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record. Fighting the strain presents critical challenges because, unlike the more common Zaire ebolavirus, there are currently no approved vaccines or targeted therapies for the Bundibugyo strain.
WHO Accelerates Clinical Trials
In response to the emergency, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that clinical trials for experimental treatments, preventive drugs, and candidate vaccines are being fast-tracked at an unprecedented pace.
