RAMGANJ, LAKSHMIPUR — In a swift disciplinary response, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has relieved Miron Hossain (Jamaddar), a ward-level leader in Lakshmipur, of all party duties following the widespread dissemination of a video purportedly showing him consuming narcotics.

The action was taken within 24 hours of the footage going viral on social media platforms, sparking intense criticism across local political and social circles.

Swift Organizational Action

Miron Hossain held the position of General Secretary for Ward No. 2 BNP within the Noagaon Union of Ramganj Upazila. According to an official press release issued on Monday, 3 August, the Ramganj Upazila unit of the BNP terminated his primary membership alongside all organizational roles.

The official notification, signed by Ramganj Upazila BNP General Secretary Monowar Hossain, stated that the strict measure was executed due to activities that breached the party’s constitution and compromised organizational discipline. Copies of the executive order have been dispatched to the Lakshmipur District BNP leadership and other relevant organizational bodies for formal record-keeping.

Local party representatives emphasised that the BNP maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding conduct that damages the party’s public standing or violates national laws.

The Video and Public Backlash

The controversy erupted on Sunday night when a 35-second video clip began circulating rapidly on Facebook. In the short footage, Miron Hossain is allegedly seen making preparations to smoke cannabis before proceeding to consume yaba—a potent mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine widely banned under national drug control laws.

The rapid proliferation of the footage generated widespread uproar across Lakshmipur, prompting civil society members and rival political factions to demand immediate accountability. The incident added momentum to ongoing local debates surrounding substance abuse and the moral standards expected of political figureheads.

Defense and Political Conspiracy Claims

Addressing the situation shortly after the video reached viral status, Miron Hossain released a separate video statement on Monday to offer his defense. Denying active drug involvement, he claimed the footage was entirely outdated and recorded under duress.

According to his version of events, the incident transpired in 2022 during the tenure of the previous administration. He alleged that several individuals affiliated with the Awami League coerced and intimidated him into performing the acts shown on camera. Hossain asserted that his political opponents deliberately archived the footage and leaked it recently as part of a calculated smear campaign to ruin his reputation within the BNP.

Despite his explanation, the upazila leadership moved forward with his immediate expulsion to preserve the party’s integrity pending any further internal review.
