Jashore Chhatra Dal Leader Detained Following College Student’s Rape

Police in Chowgacha, Jashore, have detained a local student political figure following allegations that he sexually assaulted a college student after offering to assist her with official documentation for a National Identity (NID) card.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Arafat Hossain Rabbi, holds the official position of Senior Joint General Secretary for the Chowgacha Government College branch of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the official student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Details outlined in the formal police complaint state that the victim, a female student currently enrolled in the 12th grade, had approached Rabbi—a relative and neighbour—to help her navigate the application procedures for her government-issued identity card. On Saturday morning at approximately 9:30 am, Rabbi instructed the student to travel with him to Chowgacha town to resolve the matter. Law enforcement officials noted that the suspect took this action despite being fully aware that the administrative offices at the Upazila Election Office were closed for the weekend.

Instead of proceeding to the government office, Rabbi allegedly misled the victim using false pretences, directing her to a residential property belonging to an acquaintance within Chowgacha municipality. It was at this location that the victim was subjected to physical aggression and raped, according to the official report.

Upon returning to her residence following the assault, the victim confided in her parents regarding the details of the attack. Her family promptly accompanied her to the local police station to lodge a formal written statement against the perpetrator.

Responding without delay to the report, a law enforcement unit directed by Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdus Sattar conducted an emergency operation, taking Rabbi into official custody at around 9:00 pm on Saturday evening.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mamunur Rashid of the Chowgacha Police Station confirmed the arrest, validating that action was initiated directly upon receiving the written complaint. OC Rashid confirmed that the police team is completing necessary procedural formalities, with the suspect slated to appear before the Jashore court on Sunday. Statutory legal measures, alongside standard medical and forensic procedures for the victim, are currently in progress.

In the Bangladeshi legal and civic framework, obtaining an NID card from the Bangladesh Election Commission is an essential milestone for young adults, mandatory for basic civic functions, higher education enrolment, and opening bank accounts. Due to the procedural steps involved, young residents frequently rely on senior students or community leaders for guidance—a reliance that was exploited in this case.
