Tragic Fatal Petrol Attack as Woman Murdered by Ex-Husband

A tragic incident of gender-based violence has claimed the life of a 25-year-old woman in northwestern Bangladesh after her former husband allegedly targeted her in a horrific petrol attack. The victim succumbed to severe burn injuries while being transferred to a regional hospital, prompting the swift arrest of the perpetrator by local law enforcement officers.

The victim, identified as Sumaiya Akhtar Shymoli, was the daughter of Sirajul Islam from Bijora village, situated within Bijora Union No. 7 under Biral Upazila. The perpetrator, 51-year-old Mahbubur Rahman, resides in the Lalbagh neighborhood under Rangpur Kotwali Police Station.

Investigators and community members revealed that Shymoli and Rahman had legally ended their marriage roughly two months prior to the assault. Following the dissolution of the union, Shymoli took up residence at her paternal home in Bijora. Late on Saturday night, 1 August, at approximately 11:00 pm, Rahman unlawfully gained entry to the premises. Carrying a container of petrol, he cast the flammable liquid onto Shymoli and used a cigarette lighter to set her ablaze.

Alarmed by the victim’s distress calls, nearby residents hurried to the property, forcing Rahman to flee into the night. Shymoli was immediately rushed to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital with extensive burns across her body. Recognizing the critical nature of her injuries, medical staff advised an urgent transfer to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Tragically, Shymoli passed away in the ambulance during the journey. Her body was subsequently brought back to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor formally confirmed her death at around 4:00 am on Sunday.

Biral Police Station mounted a rapid search operation, apprehending the suspect, Mahbubur Rahman, during the early hours following the crime. Confirming the details of the arrest, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Biral Police Station, Anisur Rahman Sarkar, stated that formal charges are being finalized and a murder case is currently being filed against the detainee. Post-mortem examinations are underway at the hospital morgue to fulfill statutory requirements before releasing the remains to her grieving relatives.

This brutal crime underscores the ongoing challenge of marital conflict escalating into fatal violence. Under Bangladeshi jurisprudence, offences involving violent attacks on women are prosecuted with utmost severity under the Penal Code as well as specialized statutes such as the Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act 2000. Law enforcement officials have pledged a comprehensive investigation to present a robust case before the court.
