Student Found Dead in Kalabagan Hostel Room in Dhaka

Law enforcement officers have recovered the body of a 19-year-old student from a hostel room in the capital’s Kalabagan area on Friday morning. The deceased has been identified as Pinky Biswas, a first-year nursing student at Anwer Khan Modern Nursing Institute in Dhaka.

According to police sources, the incident took place on the ground floor of a five-storey building located at 72 Crescent Road, Kalabagan. Upon receiving an emergency call from Nayan Miah, the owner of the hostel, a team from Kalabagan Police Station arrived at the premises at approximately 8:30 am.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Liza Akhtar, who led the initial response team, stated that officers had to break open the locked door of the room. Inside, they discovered Pinky Biswas hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf (orna) tied around her neck.

“We recovered the body after breaking open the door of the room,” SI Liza Akhtar confirmed to reporters. “Preliminary investigations suggest that the student may have taken her own life due to an affair or personal relationship complications. However, we are awaiting the formal post-mortem findings to establish the exact cause of death.”

Personal Background and Initial Investigation

Pinky Biswas hailed from Jambari village under the Ujirpur Police Station in Barishal district. She was the daughter of Prafulla Biswas and had recently relocated to the capital to pursue higher education in nursing.

According to the police, the hostel room was typically shared by three residents. However, at the time of the incident, Pinky was residing alone as her two roommates had travelled to their respective home villages on holiday leave. Taking advantage of the empty accommodation, she appears to have locked the door from the inside before the incident occurred.

The body has since been sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for a detailed post-mortem examination. Police have launched a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death, and relatives of the deceased have been notified. Further legal procedures are currently underway.
