Brutal murder of BNP member in Barishal

Barisal Sadar Upazila was shaken by the brutal killing of a local BNP activist on Wednesday night. The victim, Delwar Hossain Chowdhury, aged 60, was found dead near a roadside pond in Raipasha-Korapur Union. He was the son of the late Nazor Chowdhury of North Korapur village.

Local sources reported that Delwar was both a leaseholder of the Bausher Hat market and an active member of the Union BNP. His body was recovered shortly before midnight by local authorities.

OC Mizanur Rahman of Airport Police Station confirmed the incident, stating that initial reports were received from villagers who noticed a suspicious scene along the Bashurhat-Kashipur road, near Shibpur Badamtala. According to village police member Md. Osman, an auto-rickshaw driver discovered a bicycle and a muffler lying on the roadside. He alerted a local Union Parishad (UP) member, who subsequently informed the UP chairman. Osman was then sent to the scene, where he discovered Delwar’s body submerged in the pond.

Investigators noted a severe head injury on the right side of Delwar’s skull, inflicted by a sharp weapon. Police indicated that the killing does not appear to be a robbery: Delwar’s mobile phone and cash totalling BDT 152,000 were recovered at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that the murder may have been motivated by a longstanding land dispute.

A UP member, Habibur Rahman Mintu, corroborated this, revealing that Delwar had previously faced family tragedy over land conflicts, as his father Nazor Chowdhury was also murdered in similar circumstances. Local resident Azadi added that Delwar had been collecting market lease money before heading to his in-laws’ house when the assailants intercepted him. He was attacked and left in the roadside pond at Badamtala.

Further accounts indicate that the dispute involved local Awami League worker Sabuj Chowdhury, with whom Delwar reportedly had ongoing land disagreements. These tensions appear to have culminated in his violent death.

Police have been in contact with Delwar’s family and are actively pursuing the suspects. His body has been sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination. OC Mizanur Rahman emphasised that the authorities are determined to bring those responsible to justice.
