Warfaze Guitarist Komal Stands Firm on Principle

The anticipated United States tour of pioneering Bangladeshi rock band Warfaze has once more drawn attention to the absence of its founding guitarist, Ibrahim Ahmed Kamal. As the band continues to celebrate its enduring legacy, Kamal’s principled stance on political expression and personal history has emerged as a defining aspect of the narrative.

Kamal did not participate in the band’s 2024 “Forty Years Legacy Concert Tour” across the United States. Initially, his absence was attributed to health concerns and family commitments. However, he has since clarified that his visa application had been refused. According to the guitarist, his vocal support for Palestine, expressed through social media posts condemning Israeli military actions, may have influenced the outcome.

In a candid statement, Kamal asserted that he has no desire to travel to a country where he feels unable to express his views freely. He emphasised that the inability to publicly advocate for Palestine would render such a visit unnecessary. For him, the matter is not merely professional but deeply rooted in principles of humanity and freedom of speech.

Kamal’s relationship with the United States is marked by both formative experiences and profound loss. He moved there in the early 1990s to pursue higher education, spending several years in Minnesota. During that time, his family suffered a devastating tragedy when his younger brother, Ahmed Isak Abdullah Konok, died in a road accident in 1997. The incident left an enduring impact on the family, prompting Kamal to return to Bangladesh in 1998. Since then, he has neither revisited the country nor expressed a strong inclination to do so.

Despite this, Kamal applied for a visa again in 2024 in order to join Warfaze’s anniversary tour. The rejection, however, did not bring him disappointment. Reflecting on the experience, he remarked that the America he once knew no longer holds the same meaning for him.

As Warfaze prepares for another tour of the United States in the summer of 2026, Kamal’s participation remains uncertain. His recent remarks suggest that even if granted a visa, he may choose not to travel if doing so requires compromising his beliefs.

In his concluding remarks, Kamal reaffirmed his commitment to his homeland and audience. He stressed that his music is created for Bangladesh and Bengali-speaking listeners, not for global recognition. Above all, he underscored his determination to speak the truth as he sees it, maintaining that no opportunity is worth sacrificing one’s principles.
