Chelsea’s hopes of a fresh start under new management suffered an immediate setback as they succumbed 2-1 to Fulham in the latest London Derby, extending their winless streak in the Premier League to five matches.
The clash took place at Fulham’s historic home ground, Craven Cottage, on Wednesday evening, with the hosts claiming all three points in a fiercely contested encounter. Interim coach Callum McFarlane oversaw the Blues from the dugout, as newly appointed manager Liam Rosenior observed from the stands, awaiting his official debut.
Chelsea endured a major blow early on. In the 22nd minute, Marc Cucurella received a straight red card for a foul on Harry Wilson, reducing the visitors to ten men. This marked Chelsea’s eighth red card of the season across all competitions, highlighting a growing disciplinary concern for the West London outfit.
Fulham capitalised on their numerical advantage in the second half. In the 55th minute, Raúl Jiménez’s header gave the Cottagers the lead, only for Chelsea to respond through Liam Delap, who converted a close-range effort from a corner in the 72nd minute, offering the Blues a glimmer of hope.
However, Fulham restored their advantage in the 81st minute when Harry Wilson fired a half-volley from inside the box, sealing the match and leaving Chelsea frustrated once again.
The defeat sees Chelsea slip to eighth place in the Premier League standings, with 31 points from 21 matches. Fulham, meanwhile, occupy ninth position, level on points but with an inferior goal difference.
The top of the table remains dominated by Arsenal, who lead with 48 points, while Manchester City and Liverpool are tied on 43 points each, though both have played one more game than the Gunners.
