Dhaka, 30 December 2025 – Bangladesh mourns the death of Khaleda Zia, the nation’s three-time Prime Minister, a pioneering advocate of democracy, and the long-serving Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The news of her passing elicited profound grief from prominent national figures, including Professor Muhammad Yunus, Principal Adviser to the Government.
In a message posted on his official Facebook page on Tuesday morning, Professor Yunus expressed deep sorrow, stating, “The nation has lost a remarkable guardian. Khaleda Zia’s passing leaves me profoundly saddened and heartbroken.”
Professor Yunus highlighted that Khaleda Zia was far more than the leader of a political party. He described her as a central figure in the modern history of Bangladesh, whose lifelong dedication to public service, unwavering commitment to democratic principles, and persistent fight for citizens’ rights have left an indelible mark. Earlier this month, the State formally recognised her as a figure of exceptional national significance.
“Her contributions to democracy, multi-party politics, and the protection of citizens’ rights will always be remembered,” Professor Yunus added. “Her steadfast leadership against autocracy inspired new momentum in the country’s liberation of political freedom.”
A brief overview of Khaleda Zia’s political journey and achievements is presented in the table below:
| Year | Event | Notable Contributions |
|---|---|---|
| 1982 | Entered politics | Joined politics following the death of her husband, Ziaur Rahman |
| 1991 | Elected Prime Minister | Initiated economic liberalisation; restored democratic governance |
| 1991–2001 | General elections | Won five separate parliamentary seats; provided political stability |
| 2008 | Electoral victory | Secured three parliamentary seats despite political hostility; demonstrated resilient leadership |
| 2010–2020 | Social and educational initiatives | Introduced free education and scholarships; advanced women’s education |
Professor Yunus emphasised Khaleda Zia’s pioneering role as Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister and as a trailblazer in political courage. He noted her decisive role in dismantling the nine-year authoritarian rule of former military ruler Hussain Muhammad Ershad, thereby restoring democratic governance.
Despite facing 17 years of imprisonment due to politically motivated charges, Khaleda Zia’s resolve and leadership ensured that the spirit of democracy in Bangladesh remained intact.
On this day of mourning, Professor Yunus urged the people of Bangladesh to remain calm and patient, and to remember Khaleda Zia in their prayers and reflections.
