In a striking display of defiance against continental football authorities and legal warnings from Morocco, the Senegal national team proceeded with a public trophy parade at the Stade de France in Paris, reaffirming their stance amid an escalating dispute over the Africa Cup of Nations title.

The controversy dates back to January, when Senegal were initially declared winners of the Africa Cup of Nations final after a 1–0 victory over Morocco. However, the situation took a dramatic turn nearly two months later when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reversed its decision, awarding the title to Morocco following a disciplinary review. The ruling triggered widespread outrage and legal challenges, with Senegal immediately lodging an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), describing the decision as “a blatant administrative injustice.”

Tensions intensified further when CAF’s appeals board concluded that Senegal had abandoned the final after protesting a controversial penalty decision awarded to Morocco. The governing body ruled the match a forfeiture and awarded Morocco a 3–0 victory. Senegal have strongly rejected this interpretation, insisting their withdrawal was a protest against officiating decisions rather than an abandonment of the contest.

Despite mounting pressure, Senegal carried out a symbolic celebration on Saturday at the Stade de France ahead of their friendly against Peru. The event took place after a pre-match concert, when captain Kalidou Koulibaly led the squad onto the pitch carrying the Africa Cup of Nations trophy. Goalkeeper Édouard Mendy held the trophy aloft as the team completed a lap of honour around the stadium, before placing it in front of Senegalese Football Federation president Abdoulaye Fall in the presidential box.

Moroccan legal representatives had previously warned that any public display of the trophy could result in legal action, issuing formal notices to event organisers and stadium authorities. However, Senegal proceeded regardless, underscoring their refusal to accept CAF’s ruling.

Following the parade, Senegal took to the field against Peru wearing special kits featuring two stars—symbolising their African Cup triumphs in 2021 and the disputed 2024 edition. According to CAF’s current official records, however, Senegal are recognised as having only one title following the ruling.

Senegal secured a 2–0 victory in the friendly match, although several senior players, including Koulibaly, Sadio Mané, and Mendy, were rested and did not feature in the squad.
