Devastating Fire Ravages Shelters at Teknaf Refugee Camp

A ferocious blaze tore through a section of the Rohingya refugee settlements in Teknaf on Sunday night, leaving dozens of families destitute and destroying numerous shelters. The fire erupted at approximately 10:30 pm on 28th December, specifically in the transitional area between Camp 24 and Camp 25, situated in the Leda and Alikhali regions of the Upazila. As the flames licked the night sky, a wave of panic swept through the densely populated site, which is primarily composed of highly flammable bamboo and tarpaulin structures.

Preliminary reports suggest that the conflagration originated in a shelter belonging to a resident named Fatema. Local sources, including Mohammad Alam, President of the Leda Development Management Committee, indicated that the fire likely started while a mobile phone was being charged, possibly due to an electrical short circuit. Given the cramped conditions and the proximity of the dwellings, the small spark rapidly escalated into an uncontrollable inferno that gutted between 20 and 25 residential units within minutes.

The response was immediate but fraught with difficulty due to the intensity of the heat. Multiple units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence were dispatched to the scene, where they joined forces with the Armed Police Battalion (APBN), local administrative officials, and hundreds of camp residents. Armed with buckets of water and sand, the community worked desperately to create firebreaks and prevent the further spread of the flames to adjacent blocks.

Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Muhammad Kawsar Sikdar, Commander of the 16th Armed Police Battalion, confirmed the incident, stating that the situation required a massive, coordinated effort. “Our teams, alongside the fire service and the refugees themselves, are working tirelessly to bring the situation under control,” he remarked during the height of the operation. While the fire was eventually contained, the aftermath revealed a scene of utter desolation for those whose meager belongings were reduced to ash.

Residents described a harrowing scene as the fire spread. Syed Alam, a witness from the Leda camp, noted that the speed of the fire left almost no time for families to salvage their possessions. Another resident, Nur Akam Mohammad Alam, highlighted the extreme difficulty in battling the blaze due to the sheer intensity of the heat radiating from the burning shelters.

Although no loss of life has been reported, the economic and emotional toll on the displaced families is severe. Many had already lost everything before arriving in Bangladesh and have now seen their secondary lives uprooted once again. Local authorities have announced that a full assessment of the damages will be conducted once the site is completely cooled, and rehabilitation efforts for the affected families are expected to begin shortly.
