Elon Musk: First Ever Half-Trillionaire

Elon Musk, the American billionaire, currently holds the largest personal fortune in the world. On Wednesday, his wealth briefly reached a historic milestone, surpassing $500 billion—or half a trillion dollars—for the first time ever.

Understanding the Numbers

  • 1 billion = 1,000 million = 100 crore
  • 1 trillion = 1,000 billion = 100,000 crore

According to Forbes, this is the first time in world history that an individual’s net worth has touched the half-trillion-dollar mark.

Using Forbes’ real-time billionaire tracker, the AFP news agency reported that Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, briefly saw his wealth rise to $500.1 billion. It later slightly decreased to $499.1 billion.

Rank Billionaire Net Worth (USD)
1 Elon Musk 500.1 B (briefly) / 499.1 B
2 Larry Ellison 350.7 B
3 Mark Zuckerberg 245.8 B

At 54 years old, Musk’s net worth surpasses other leading billionaires by a significant margin.

AFP notes that Musk briefly entered politics during the second term of U.S. President Donald Trump, causing a slight dip in Tesla shares. After stepping back from political involvement, his company valuations rebounded, and revenues from his other ventures increased.

  • Education: Musk, born in South Africa, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. He later enrolled at Stanford University but dropped out to focus on business ventures.
  • First Millionaire: In 1999, Musk sold a publication software company to Compaq for $300 million.
  • PayPal: Musk later co-founded the financial transaction platform, which merged with PayPal. He eventually exited that venture.
  • SpaceX: Founded in 2002, Musk’s space rocket company aimed to revolutionise space travel.
  • Tesla: In 2004, Musk became Chairman of Tesla, guiding it to become a leading electric vehicle manufacturer.
