Bashundhara Kings brought the curtain down on the first phase of the Bangladesh Premier League with a match that encapsulated football’s enduring unpredictability. Despite racing to a commanding three-goal lead within just 32 minutes, the reigning champions were ultimately forced to settle for a dramatic 3–3 draw by a spirited Fakirapool Young Men’s Club, who staged a stunning late comeback in Manikganj.
The match appeared firmly under Kings’ control in the opening half-hour. Their attacking intent, swift transitions and clinical finishing overwhelmed Fakirapool’s defence early on, allowing the champions to establish what seemed an unassailable advantage. At that stage, the contest looked destined to conclude as a routine victory for the league leaders.
However, football rarely adheres to script. As the match progressed, Fakirapool gradually grew in confidence, refusing to be overawed by the deficit or the stature of their opponents. Their resilience was finally rewarded in the closing stages, as they produced an extraordinary revival. In the final 14 minutes, Fakirapool struck three times in quick succession, dismantling Kings’ defensive organisation and silencing the previously jubilant Kings supporters. When the final whistle sounded, the comeback was complete, and the draw felt as valuable as a victory for Fakirapool.
Elsewhere in the final round of the first phase, Abahani Limited enjoyed a comfortable 3–0 win over Arambagh Krira Sangha in Cumilla. Malian forward Suleman Diabate was once again influential, scoring twice, while Bruno added the third to seal a dominant performance. The victory helped Abahani consolidate their position in the league standings.
Fortis FC continued their impressive campaign by defeating PWD 2–0, further underlining their status as the season’s surprise package. Meanwhile, Police FC and Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society shared the spoils in a tightly contested 1–1 draw.
At the end of the first phase, Bashundhara Kings and Fortis FC are level on 18 points from nine matches. Kings retain top spot due to a superior goal difference, with Fortis sitting second. Fortis’ consistency has been one of the league’s standout stories, having lost just once, drawn three matches and secured five victories so far.
Rahmatganj occupy third place with 15 points, followed closely by Police FC on 14. Abahani sit fifth with 13 points, while defending champions Mohammedan Sporting Club find themselves in an unfamiliar sixth position with 10 points, highlighting an inconsistent start to their campaign.
With the second phase ahead, the title race remains finely poised, promising more drama as the league resumes.
