Five members of the same family have been injured, two of them critically, after a private car suffered a tyre blowout and crashed into a roadside tree in Chandina Upazila of Cumilla on Friday afternoon.
The accident occurred at approximately 12:00 pm along the busy ঢাকা–চট্টগ্রাম মহাসড়ক, near the Harikhola–Kurchap এলাকায়. According to local authorities, the family had been travelling from Dhaka to Feni to celebrate the upcoming Eid festival when the incident took place.
Police sources reported that the vehicle was moving at a moderate speed when one of its tyres suddenly burst. The driver lost control instantly, causing the car to veer off the highway, collide with a tree, and plunge into a roadside ditch. The impact left the vehicle severely damaged and passengers trapped inside.
The injured include 70-year-old Mostafa Mia and his 60-year-old wife Selina, residents of Paschim Shilua village in Chhagalnaiya Upazila, Feni. Three other family members, whose identities have not yet been disclosed, also sustained injuries in the crash. Medical staff have confirmed that Mostafa Mia and Selina are in critical condition.
Local residents were the first to respond, rushing to the scene and assisting in the rescue effort before emergency services arrived. With the help of police, the injured were quickly transported to Chandina Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment.
Dr Rajib Saha, the attending physician at the health complex, stated that two of the victims required urgent advanced care due to the severity of their injuries. They were subsequently referred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment.
Officials from the Elliotganj Highway Police Station, including Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin, have confirmed the details of the accident. An initial investigation suggests that the tyre burst was the primary cause, though further examination of the vehicle is expected to determine whether poor maintenance or road conditions played a role.
Road accidents involving tyre blowouts are not uncommon on Bangladesh’s highways, particularly during peak travel periods such as Eid holidays, when traffic volume increases significantly. Authorities have once again urged drivers to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and exercise caution on long-distance journeys.
