Farmers in Hatibandha of Lalmonirhat blocked the highway for nearly two hours after failing to obtain fertiliser, causing a long traffic tailback. The farmers alleged that although they visit the dealers daily for fertiliser, the dealers refuse to provide it on various excuses. Despite having stock, the dealers continue to claim that fertiliser is unavailable.
On Sunday (30 November) afternoon, farmers gathered in front of the Messrs Morshed fertiliser outlet adjacent to the Upazila Auditorium Hall and staged a blockade on the highway for about two hours.
According to the farmers, Hatibandha is primarily a maize-producing region, and nearly 90 per cent of the local population depends on maize for their livelihood. Although the maize cultivation season has begun, they are unable to cultivate maize, tobacco or paddy due to the ongoing fertiliser crisis. Dealers tell them that the fertiliser has not arrived. Eventually, the farmers resorted to blocking the highway to press their demand. They withdrew the blockade following assurances from the Hatibandha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shamim Mia.
Farmer Momin said that when they go to the dealer for fertiliser, they are told it is unavailable. Fertiliser is sold secretly at night, yet farmers are denied when they ask for it. This is hampering cultivation, he added.
Hatibandha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shamim Mia said that the farmers had blocked the road demanding fertiliser. After discussions, they lifted the blockade.
