Significant progress has been made in the investigation of the attempted assassination of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inquilab platform, as Rapid Action Battalion-2 (RAB-2) recovered weapons and other equipment linked to the attack. During a late-night operation on Tuesday, authorities seized eleven live rounds, two fully loaded magazines, and a knife. These items were discovered in the vicinity of the residence of Faysal Karim Masud’s elder sister and subsequently handed over to the Detective Branch for further forensic examination and investigation. In the same operation, Faysal’s father, Humayun Kabir, was arrested, while his mother was brought to the RAB headquarters for questioning.
According to Additional Police Superintendent Shamsul Islam of RAB-2, the elder sister resides near the water tank in Colonel Gali, West Agargaon, under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Review of CCTV footage revealed that on the morning of 12 December, Faysal and an accomplice left the residence on a motorcycle. Later, at approximately 4:05 pm, Faysal, his accomplice, mother, and a niece were seen removing items from a vacant space between two buildings. Following this, they departed the area in a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw.
Acting on the CCTV evidence and confidential intelligence, a RAB team conducted a raid, recovering the two magazines, eleven rounds of ammunition, and the knife. Additional items retrieved from the sister’s residence included a tablet, an Android smartphone, an older mobile phone, two National Identity Cards, five company cheques, fifteen bank cheque books, six passports, and 38 loose bank cheque leaves.
Humayun Kabir was apprehended in Narsingdi. During a search, and following information provided by a local relative, three more firearms were recovered from a nearby pond. RAB’s Director of Law and Media, Wing Commander M. Z. M. Intekhhab Chowdhury, confirmed that Faysal’s mother was brought in for interrogation.
The attack on Hadi, which occurred on 12 December in the Bijoynagar area of Dhaka, involved assailants firing at him from a moving motorcycle. Hadi, a prospective independent candidate for Dhaka-8, was critically injured and transferred to Singapore for advanced medical treatment. While law enforcement continues efforts to apprehend the main perpetrators, sources indicate they have crossed the border into India.
RAB stated that this recovery operation and the arrests are expected to accelerate the investigation into the assassination attempt, increasing the likelihood of swiftly identifying and capturing all responsible individuals, thereby reinforcing law and order and public confidence in the justice system.
