Four Assistant Officers Dismissed at Barisal Polling Station

In a significant disciplinary action ahead of the ongoing national elections, four assistant presiding officers were dismissed from their duties at a polling station in Barisal’s Babuganj Upazila. The incident occurred late on the night of Wednesday, 11 February, at the Barkani Government Primary School polling centre in the Birshreshtha Jahangirnagar Union, when local residents apprehended the officials and handed them over to the Upazila administration.

The Upazila Executive Officer (UNO), Asma Ul Husna, subsequently relieved the four officers of their responsibilities, citing violations of electoral protocol.

The dismissed officers are:

Name Designation
Md. Sabbir Hossain Assistant Presiding Officer
Mohammad Kabir Hossain Assistant Presiding Officer
Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain Assistant Presiding Officer
Habibur Rahman Assistant Presiding Officer

Md. Abdur Rouf, the presiding officer and Babuganj Upazila Agricultural Officer, stated, “The four officials left the polling centre at night without my permission. They were subsequently apprehended by local residents, who informed the administration. The authorities then took custody of the officers and implemented disciplinary measures.”

UNO Asma Ul Husna emphasised, “Remaining outside the polling station without the presiding officer’s authorisation while on duty is completely unacceptable. Action has been taken against the individuals in accordance with disciplinary regulations. The local administration is closely monitoring the situation.”

Local sources reported that the officers were detained around 1:30 a.m. during a meeting at the residence of Mohammad Rashed Bepari, secretary of the Union’s Jamaat-e-Islami branch, before being handed over to the administration. The incident caused widespread concern and discussion within the local community.

In response, four new assistant presiding officers have been appointed to the polling centre. Authorities have issued detailed instructions to the replacement officers to maintain discipline, while the presence of local police and Red Cross personnel has been ensured to safeguard voters.

Residents expressed relief over the swift response but urged vigilance. Md. Shipon commented, “Such behaviour threatens the transparency and orderly conduct of the electoral process. Prompt administrative action is necessary.” Abdus Salam added, “The issue has been addressed quickly, but consistent supervision is essential to prevent recurrence.”

The administration reiterated that any form of indiscipline will not be tolerated and affirmed its commitment to ensuring a smooth, peaceful, and credible election process.
