In the long and impassioned history of the anti-British struggle in the Indian subcontinent, few names shine as brightly—and yet remain as unjustly overlooked—as that of Revolutionary Prafulla Chandra Chakki. Born on 10 December 1888 in Biharhāt of Shibganj, Bogura, Chakki emerged as one of the fiercest young rebels committed to the dream of freeing the motherland from colonial subjugation. Even in his teenage years, he embraced the creed of revolution with an unshakeable conviction that set him apart.

A Central Figure in the Muzaffarpur Bomb Attack

Although the Muzaffarpur bomb attack is often remembered through the legendary tale of Khudiram Bose, historical accounts reveal that the principal planner and mastermind behind the mission was none other than Bogura’s own valiant son—Prafulla Chandra Chakki.

The operation sought to assassinate Magistrate Kingsford, notorious for his brutal judgments against political activists. While Khudiram Bose was captured and later executed, Chakki refused to let himself fall into British hands. Cornered by colonial police at Mokama Ghat, he chose to sacrifice his life, ending it with a revolver shot to prevent arrest. His martyrdom remains one of the most dramatic and poignant acts of defiance in the revolutionary tradition.

The Uncelebrated Hero

Yet tragedy of another sort followed—history’s selective memory.
Where Khudiram received songs, plays and cinematic portrayals, Prafulla’s name gradually faded from public consciousness. Despite his monumental role, state-level recognition has remained painfully insufficient. His ancestral home is now on the brink of disappearance, preserved only through the voluntary efforts of the Prafulla Chakki Parishad, a private initiative fighting to keep his legacy intact.

Governmental initiatives—memorials, commemorations, annual observances—are scarce, if not entirely absent. The contrast with Kolkata is striking: while a road stretching from Sealdah Station to Rajabazar bears his name, his birthplace Bogura holds almost no visible tribute. A street once named in his honour near Bhandari Girls’ School is now barely recognisable, a testament to collective historical neglect.
