In a remarkable turn of events that underscores the unpredictable journeys within modern sport, Aryaman Birla has transitioned from an aspiring cricketer to the owner of one of the Indian Premier League’s most high-profile franchises, Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Aryaman’s cricketing career began with promise when he was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for ₹3 million during the 2018 IPL auction. However, despite being part of the squad, he did not make a single appearance that season. By 2020, Rajasthan Royals had released him, bringing an abrupt halt to his IPL ambitions before they had truly begun.

Now, at the age of 28, Aryaman has re-emerged in the IPL ecosystem in a vastly different capacity. A consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group has acquired Royal Challengers Bengaluru for a reported sum exceeding ₹16,000 crore, making it one of the most significant franchise deals in cricket history. Following the acquisition, Aryaman has been appointed chairman, marking a dramatic shift from player to decision-maker at the highest level.

The son of industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, Aryaman initially pursued cricket as a professional career before moving into business. As a left-handed batsman representing Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket, he featured in nine first-class matches, scoring 414 runs, including a century. Notably, he once shared the dressing room with Rajat Patidar, who is now the captain of RCB—an intriguing full-circle moment.

Aryaman’s journey, however, has not been without personal challenges. After being released by Rajasthan Royals, he experienced a period of mental health struggles, prompting him to take an indefinite break from cricket. At the time, he publicly emphasised the importance of mental well-being, writing that inner peace had become his foremost priority. His candidness was widely appreciated and contributed to broader conversations around mental health in sport.

Stepping away from cricket, Aryaman redirected his focus towards the family business, gradually establishing himself within the corporate sphere. His transition reflects a broader trend of athletes leveraging discipline and resilience gained in sport to succeed in business leadership roles.

The recent acquisition of RCB from Diageo includes full ownership of both the men’s and women’s teams, signalling a comprehensive and ambitious investment strategy. Under Aryaman’s chairmanship, the franchise is expected to explore new avenues in sports management, media integration, and global branding.

Speaking after assuming his new role, Aryaman described the opportunity as a privilege, expressing confidence that the group’s expertise in sport and media would help elevate the franchise to new heights. His vision aligns with the IPL’s broader evolution into a global sporting and entertainment powerhouse.
