Singapore-based sovereign wealth fund GIC has joined forces with Japan’s Sony Music Group (SMG) to establish a strategic investment partnership aimed at acquiring and enhancing high-quality music catalogues across diverse genres. The announcement, made on Wednesday, underscores both organisations’ commitment to the rapidly expanding global music sector.
The collaboration leverages GIC’s long-term capital and extensive global investment experience alongside Sony Music Group’s century-long operational expertise in the music industry. By combining these strengths, the partnership intends to identify, acquire, and manage marquee music catalogues while creating new monetisation opportunities for artists and songwriters worldwide.
Kevin Kelleher, Chief Operating Officer of Sony Music, commented, “Partnering with GIC brings together long-term capital and Sony Music Group’s operational capabilities to acquire and manage premier catalogues, creating new opportunities for artists’ and songwriters’ music globally.”
Girish Karira, Head of Integrated Strategies Group at GIC, emphasised the fund’s strategic approach: “As a long-term investor, GIC seeks to be a creative and flexible capital partner to strategic industry leaders like Sony. The music ecosystem is a resilient sector with attractive long-term growth prospects, particularly as streaming monetisation continues to evolve through premiumisation and subscriber growth in emerging markets.”
GIC has been actively investing in the music industry for nearly a decade, exploring opportunities across companies, catalogues, and music-focused funds since 2017. The fund has also maintained a significant presence in Japan since the 1980s, consistently seeking to expand partnerships with leading regional corporations. Sony Bank Inc. will also participate in this partnership, further broadening its financial collaboration within the region.
The partnership reflects a convergence of financial strength and operational expertise, aiming not only to generate long-term returns but also to support artists and songwriters in leveraging their intellectual property on a global scale. Analysts note that the initiative comes amid a surge in streaming revenues and premium subscription growth, positioning the collaboration to capitalise on both established and emerging music markets.
