In a landmark initiative ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, the Government of Bangladesh has announced a plan to provide low-cost protein sources—milk, eggs, and meat—to one million low-income families. The programme aims to alleviate nutritional deficiencies among vulnerable households and ensure access to essential dietary protein during the fasting month.
On Thursday, 19 February, at the Livestock Research Institute in Mohakhali, Dhaka, the programme was formally inaugurated by State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Sultan Salauddin Tuku. Addressing the gathering, the minister emphasised that the initiative would directly benefit families struggling to afford adequate nutrition, particularly protein-rich foods.
“Through this programme, one million families will be able to purchase milk, eggs, and meat at subsidised rates,” the minister said. “Sales will be conducted at 25 designated locations across the capital, including Uttara, Azimpur, and Mirpur, and the programme will continue throughout the month of Ramadan.”
The state minister further stated that the government plans to implement Family Cards, Agriculture Cards, and Health Cards to fulfil electoral commitments and facilitate access to social welfare services. “In order to meet public expectations effectively, the programme will prioritise honesty, dedication, and coordinated teamwork among all implementing agencies,” he added.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Dr. Md. Abu Sufian, Director General of the Department of Livestock Services. Special guests included Abu Taher Muhammad Jaber, Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Mashiur Rahman, President of the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC), and Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, President of the Bangladesh Cattle and Fattening Farmers Association (BCFFA). Senior officials from both the ministry and the department were also present.
The programme is expected to significantly reduce malnutrition among economically disadvantaged communities, providing a much-needed boost in protein intake during the fasting month.
