In a daring police operation in Banshkhali, Chittagong, authorities have arrested two individuals found in possession of a domestically manufactured firearm concealed inside a minibus. The arrests were made during a joint operation by the District Detective Branch (DB) and Banshkhali Police on Saturday night, which also led to the seizure of the vehicle.
The suspects, identified as Ahmad Mostafa, aged 26, and Anik Kanti De, aged 24, are residents of the Howan Killa area in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar district. Mostafa was operating the minibus, while Anik was assisting him. According to police sources, the vehicle was en route from Maheshkhali to Chittagong when it was stopped for inspection near the Diabetic Hospital in the upazila.
A thorough search of the minibus revealed a locally manufactured firearm hidden behind the front passenger seat. Following this discovery, both the driver and his assistant were immediately taken into custody, and the vehicle was impounded.
Officer-in-Charge of Banshkhali Police Station, Md. Khaled Saifullah, confirmed the seizure and stated that a case has been filed under the Arms Act against the two individuals. Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the weapon, its intended destination, and whether any larger network is involved.
This incident has sparked concern among local residents, highlighting the ongoing challenges of illegal arms trafficking in the region. Law enforcement officials have emphasised that such operations are part of a broader effort to prevent the circulation of illegal firearms and maintain public safety.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, particularly involving vehicles transporting unknown goods. The arrest of Mostafa and Anik underscores the vigilance of the police and their commitment to cracking down on criminal activities in the area.
