Tanvir Mahmud, Managing Director (MD) of Hallmark Group and a recipient of a life sentence in the Sonali Bank loan fraud case, has passed away. He died on Saturday at around 10:30 pm while receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was 55 years old.
According to sources from Dhaka Central Jail, Mahmud had been suffering from long-term health issues including kidney complications, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other serious medical conditions. On Saturday afternoon, around 1:30 pm, his condition deteriorated suddenly, prompting authorities to transfer him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. After an initial health assessment, the attending physicians recommended his admission. Following medical advice, he was formally admitted at 4 pm. Despite medical intervention, he passed away later that evening.
Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the hospital police post, confirmed Mahmud’s death to Prothom Alo. He stated that Mahmud had been receiving treatment in Ward 602 under the custody of the prison authorities.
Tanvir Mahmud had been sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the high-profile Sonali Bank loan fraud case, a scandal that drew significant public and media attention in Bangladesh. His death marks a notable development in one of the country’s largest financial fraud cases, drawing both legal and business communities into discussions about accountability, corporate governance, and the treatment of high-profile convicts. Analysts suggest that the combination of prolonged incarceration and chronic health conditions contributed to his untimely demise.
Mahmud’s passing underscores ongoing concerns over the medical care of prisoners in Bangladesh, particularly those held under life sentences, and is expected to renew public and official scrutiny of jail healthcare and procedural transparency.
