Hamza Sidelined by Knee Injury

Bangladesh’s national football team faces two crucial matches at the end of March, but troubling news has emerged ahead of these fixtures. Hamza Dewan Chowdhury, the team’s talented midfielder, has been ruled out due to a knee injury. Recovery is expected to take several weeks, putting his participation in doubt.

The injury occurred last Saturday during Leicester City’s clash with Charlton Athletic. Hamza sustained a knock to his knee that was severe enough to require him to be stretchered off the pitch. Following the match, Leicester’s interim coach, Andy King, confirmed that it would not be possible to return Hamza to action immediately, and that his knee would undergo further scans to determine the exact extent of the damage.

According to multiple international reports, Hamza is suffering from a Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) injury. Typically, such injuries require six to eight weeks away from competitive football. The good news is that surgery is unlikely to be necessary. Leicester City will oversee his treatment and rehabilitation, while the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) will closely monitor his progress.

Hamza, aged 26, has quickly become a fan favourite among Bangladeshi football supporters. His presence in the midfield adds considerable strength to the national team. The BFF was hoping to field him in the friendly against Vietnam on 26 March and the Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore on 31 March, although Bangladesh has already been eliminated from the third round of Asian Cup qualifying.

Leicester City’s situation is equally challenging. Following relegation from the Premier League last season, the club has struggled in the Championship. Currently, they are only six points above the relegation zone, where West Bromwich Albion sits. The long-term absence of a key midfielder like Hamza could therefore be a significant setback for the club as well.
