Dhaka Police Arrest 523 Suspects in Capital-Wide Crime Crackdown

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 523 individuals and registered 40 cases following an extensive 24-hour law enforcement drive across the capital. The coordinated operation, conducted across all major administrative divisions of the metropolis, targeted narcotics trafficking, street crime, and ongoing criminal activities as part of the force’s heightened security measures.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Media and Public Relations) Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed the details of the operation on Saturday, 10th October. Officers executed synchronized raids across multiple neighborhoods, leading to significant seizures of illegal substances and smuggled property, alongside the recovery of a crime victim.

Crime statistics and departmental records reveal that the Mirpur Division recorded the highest number of apprehensions with 90 arrests, followed closely by the Motijheel Division with 82, and the Tejgaon Division with 79. Enforcement units in the Wari Division detained 75 individuals, while the Lalbagh and Gulshan Divisions apprehended 59 and 47 suspects, respectively. Lower counts were reported in the Uttara Division with 43 arrests and the Ramna Division with 36. Specialized operational units also contributed to the tally, with the Detective Branch arresting 11 individuals and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit taking one suspect into custody.

Beyond the detentions, personnel confiscated a sizable haul of narcotics, including 75.25 kilograms of cannabis, 1,442 Yaba tablets, seven grams of heroin, and two cans of beer. Law enforcement officers also impounded several vehicles and assets linked to illegal activities, comprising a covered van, two motorcycles, nine mobile phones, and 2,400 taka in cash.

The primary objective of these recurring citywide drives remains the disruption of local drug distribution networks and the containment of opportunistic violent crime in dense urban sectors. Metropolitan authorities emphasized that legal proceedings against all detained individuals are currently underway, with formal charges being prepared at respective police stations. Similar preventive enforcement strategies are expected to continue across the capital over the coming weeks to maintain law and order.
