A midnight home invasion in Chattogram’s Rangunia Upazila has left three members of the same family nursing pellet wounds and severe hack injuries, while two young children were subjected to violent physical assaults. The harrowing incident transpired late on Thursday night in the Lusar Baper Tila area, situated within Ward No. 1 of Sarafbhati Union under the jurisdiction of the Dakshin Rangunia Police Station. News of the brutal assault only surfaced publicly on Friday evening following a formal site inspection by law enforcement authorities.
According to police officials and victims’ statements, a group of masked assailants forcibly entered the homestead of Jamir Ali Talukder under cover of darkness. The victims identified as suffering from shotgun pellet wounds and sharp weapon injuries are Md Golap (45), his fourteen-year-old son Md Asif, and his elder brother Mohammad Syed (55). In addition, Golap’s two young children—three-year-old Mohammad and five-year-old Muhammad Rakib—were beaten during the rampage. Two of the severely wounded adults are currently undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, while the third remains admitted at the local Upazila Health Complex.
Family members disclosed that despite wearing masks, the perpetrators belonged to a locally recognised criminal syndicate. Upon gaining entry, the armed gang demanded a ransom of £3,500 (500,000 BDT). When the family failed to yield the cash, the criminals launched an indiscriminate attack, damaging household goods, ransacking the property, and opening fire at close range with shotguns loaded with lead pellets. Before fleeing the scene, the gang looted available cash, mobile phones, and gold ornaments.
Halima Begum, the wife of Md Golap, detailed the ferocity of the attack, explaining that her husband sustained gunshot wounds to his right hand before the attackers struck the same arm with a Chinese axe. Her teenage son, Asif, suffered deep lacerations to his left wrist.
Terrorised by threats of further retaliation, the traumatised family initially refrained from reporting the assault on Friday morning. Police eventually learned of the crime through local residents and dispatched officers to investigate the scene. Official legal complaints have been delayed as the family members remain preoccupied with emergency medical care at the hospitals.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Belayet Hossain of the Rangunia Circle visited the site and confirmed that efforts are actively underway to identify and apprehend the criminals. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dakshin Rangunia Police Station, Md Hilal Uddin, echoed these statements, assuring that strict legal measures will be enforced once formal charges are lodged.
Violent incidents involving extortion and local armed gangs present an ongoing security challenge across rural parts of Bangladesh. Isolated hilly regions such as Sarfabhata have historically experienced sporadic violent crime linked to rival criminal networks, land disputes, and extortion rackets. The proliferation of illegal firearms and improvised firearms—often used in robbery attempts—frequently results in severe injuries to civilians. Law enforcement authorities in Chattogram have periodically conducted targeted anti-drives to curb violent crime and disarm local gangs in vulnerable upazilas.
