LONDON, March 21, 2025 – Heathrow Airport, Europe's busiest air hub, was forced to close early on Friday following a devastating fire at a nearby electrical substation that provides power to the facility, located to the west of London.
The fire, which broke out at a substation in Hayes, a town in the London borough of Hillingdon, led to a significant power outage, severely disrupting operations at the airport. Flight-tracking website FlightRadar24 confirmed that multiple flights had already been diverted to other airports, with many more expected to follow. Heathrow authorities have warned that the disruption could last for several days.
Major Disruptions and Flight Diversions
Heathrow’s operator issued a statement confirming the power failure and advised passengers not to travel to the airport until further notice. "Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage," the statement said. "The airport will remain closed until just before midnight (23:59 GMT) on Friday, and passengers should not attempt to travel to the airport under any circumstances."
As of Friday morning, a Qantas flight arriving from Perth was diverted to Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, while a United Airlines flight from New York was re-routed to Shannon Airport in Ireland.
Firefighters Battling Blaze in Challenging Conditions
The London Fire Brigade described the fire at the substation as "significant," and a spokesperson confirmed that the incident was having widespread effects, including power cuts to local businesses and homes in the area. Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said, "The fire has caused a power outage affecting a large number of homes and businesses, and we are working closely with our partners to minimise disruption. Our firefighters are working tirelessly under challenging conditions to control the blaze as quickly as possible."
Impact on Heathrow’s Operations
Heathrow handles more than 80 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in the world. The closure has resulted in considerable disruption to both domestic and international flights, with many passengers left stranded or delayed.
Authorities have warned that the ongoing power cut could affect various services, including baggage handling, security checks, and flight scheduling, adding to the already chaotic situation.
The Broader Impact of the Power Outage
The fire's effects extend beyond the airport, with local communities in Hayes facing power outages. Emergency services have been working to restore electricity to homes and businesses, but the scale of the damage remains unclear. The situation has highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure, and the impact on the local community is expected to be felt for several days.
Supplementary Information:
Heathrow Airport in Numbers: Heathrow serves as a major international gateway, handling over 80 million passengers annually and offering flights to more than 180 destinations worldwide. The airport is a crucial hub for international trade and tourism.
Local Community Impact: The fire has not only affected airport operations but also local businesses and households, with many in the area of Hayes facing power cuts. Local authorities are working to resolve the situation, but some areas may remain without power for extended periods.
Previous Power Disruptions: Heathrow, along with other major airports, has faced similar disruptions in the past due to power issues, though this incident is one of the most significant in recent years.
As investigations continue and the fire is brought under control, travellers and residents are urged to stay updated on the situation, with a clear emphasis on avoiding travel to the airport until operations resume.
