Australia set a challenging total of 338 in the semifinal, and most believed the game was already over—after all, the seven-time world champions have long dominated women’s cricket.
However, India scripted a sensational turnaround in Navi Mumbai. Chasing 339, they reached the target with five wickets in hand and nine balls remaining, setting a new world record for the highest successful run chase in women’s cricket and securing a place in the final.
The previous record was held by Australia, who had chased down 330 against India earlier in the same tournament. This time, India avenged that loss in spectacular fashion.
Jemimah Rodrigues was the standout performer, scoring a brilliant 127 off 134 balls with 14 fours. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur supported her with 89 runs from 88 deliveries.
Australia’s innings was led by Phoebe Litchfield, who struck 119 off 93 balls, including 17 fours and 3 sixes. Alyssa Perry made 77, and Ashleigh Gardner added 63 off 45 balls before the team was dismissed for 338 in 49.5 overs.
India will now meet South Africa in Sunday’s final, with the Proteas reaching their maiden World Cup final after defeating England.
