Broader Context
Afghanistan is rich in coal, marble, lithium, gold, minerals, and precious stones, but its mining sector suffers from:
- Lack of regulatory oversight
- Outdated infrastructure
- Minimal safety protocols
- Frequent fatal accidents
Workers often operate without proper safety gear or equipment, contributing to repeated tragedies.
In December 2024, 22 miners were successfully rescued after a similar collapse in Samangan Province, highlighting both the recurring risks and the resilience of emergency efforts.
Despite the country’s vast natural resources, mining safety remains a critical and under-addressed concern, especially in northern regions where fatal collapses are becoming all too common.
