Indian National Identified Among Sydney Bondi Beach Attackers

Australian authorities have confirmed that one of the perpetrators involved in the deadly Bondi Beach attack in Sydney was an Indian national. On Tuesday, Indian police provided details confirming that the deceased attacker, Sajid Akram (50), had travelled from Hyderabad, India, to Australia. His family in India reportedly had no knowledge of his extremist leanings.

Sajid allegedly carried out the attack alongside his son, Navid Akram. The assault has so far claimed 16 lives, making it one of the deadliest shootings in Australia in nearly three decades. Following the incident, Australian law enforcement has launched a terrorism investigation focusing on possible threats against the Jewish community.

According to the Telangana State Police, Sajid Akram had studied commerce in Hyderabad before moving to Australia in November 1998 in search of employment opportunities. He leaves behind a son and a daughter. Over the years, Sajid reportedly made six trips back to India to handle property matters and visit his parents.

The Indian police statement emphasises that Sajid’s family was unaware of any extremist ideology and that prior to his departure in 1998, there were no adverse records against him. Officials also clarified that there is no evidence linking Sajid or his son Navid to any local influence or terrorist networks in Telangana, India.

Meanwhile, Australian authorities revealed that in the previous month, Sajid had travelled to the Philippines using his Indian passport, while his son Navid used his Australian passport. The purpose of this trip is currently under investigation. It remains unclear whether the father-son duo had connections to any terrorist groups or underwent any form of training while abroad.

The Bondi Beach attack has sent shockwaves across Australia, prompting heightened security measures and intensified international cooperation to trace the attackers’ movements and potential networks. Authorities continue to emphasise that the investigation is ongoing and more details will be released as they are verified.
