Israel has forcefully denounced Canada’s recent move to recognise a Palestinian state at the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly session, labelling the initiative a product of a “distorted campaign of international pressure.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday from its embassy in Ottawa, Israel condemned the announcement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, asserting that such recognition is premature and dangerous.
“Recognising a Palestinian state in the absence of accountable government, functioning institutions, or benevolent leadership, rewards and legitimises the monstrous barbarity of Hamas on October 7, 2023,” the statement read.
Israel’s response underscores deepening diplomatic tensions as several countries weigh the possibility of supporting Palestinian statehood in multilateral forums. The Israeli government maintains that statehood recognition without prior conditions – such as a negotiated peace settlement and institutional reforms – emboldens extremist factions and undermines regional stability.
Canada’s stance aligns it with a growing number of nations advocating for a two-state solution. However, Israel’s reaction reflects its longstanding position that any move towards recognising Palestinian sovereignty should be contingent upon security guarantees and political reforms within Palestinian territories.
Further diplomatic engagement between the two countries remains uncertain, as both sides hold firm to their positions ahead of the UN General Assembly vote.
