Kaif Advises Omitting Abhishek From Final

Ahead of the T20 World Cup final, Abhishek Sharma, once considered India’s key batsman, has come under scrutiny due to a prolonged slump in form. Despite being ranked as India’s top batsman in the current ICC rankings, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has suggested that Abhishek be rested for the final.

Kaif’s reasoning centres on Abhishek’s inconsistent performance during the tournament. In seven matches, the opener has scored only 89 runs. His sole significant contribution came against Zimbabwe, where he made 55 runs, while in the other six games he managed scores of 0, 0, 0, 15, 10, and 9 respectively. Considering these figures, Kaif believes it is justified to consider giving him a break.

On his YouTube channel, Kaif cited West Indies opener Brandon King as an example. He said, “India can afford to rest Abhishek Sharma. He has played many matches so far. In T20 cricket, making a change causes no harm. When King was out of form, Roston Chase opened in his place against India. They gave King opportunities in 5–6 matches, but rested him before a crucial game. Similarly, bringing in Sanju Samson worked well for the team.”

Possible Replacements and Opener Options

If Abhishek is left out, India’s opening combination is not expected to be disrupted. Ishan Kishan can step up to open the innings. Kaif emphasised that India has several reliable alternatives. He said, “India has experienced players. Rinku Singh consistently scores runs in Tests, the Ranji Trophy, and the IPL. Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj can take wickets in any conditions. If a player is out of form, it makes no sense to bench a player who is performing well.”

Kaif also pointed out that India’s spinner Varun Chakravarthy is similarly out of rhythm. Like Abhishek, Varun is currently the number-one ranked bowler in the ICC T20 rankings. However, in the semi-final, he conceded 64 runs in four overs. Kaif believes Varun will still be included in the final, expecting adjustments to his line and length.

Comparing Abhishek to Samson, Kaif said, “Abhishek is still relatively new to ICC events. Excluding ICC tournaments, his record is impressive, but international T20s are different. Samson has over 8,000 T20 runs, immense power-hitting ability, and consistently ranks among IPL’s top performers. Abhishek, on the other hand, is young and still developing; he is not yet fully prepared for high-pressure matches.”

Kaif’s advice underscores a strategic approach: resting a struggling player while relying on in-form and experienced alternatives may prove crucial in India’s bid for T20 World Cup glory.
