In a significant escalation of electoral tensions, a mobile court led by district authorities detained a local leader of Jamaat-e-Islami at a polling station in the Bogra-6 (Sadar) constituency on Wednesday night. The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 pm at the Bhandari Girls’ High School centre, sparking immediate controversy and local unrest.
The detainee has been identified as Nasirul Islam, the Secretary for Ward No. 2 of Bogra Municipality’s Jamaat-e-Islami unit. According to Executive Magistrate Palash Chandra Sarkar, the administration received intelligence that a group of 10 to 15 individuals had unlawfully entered the school premises under the cover of darkness.
Upon arriving at the scene, the mobile court and law enforcement units conducted a swift operation, managing to apprehend Mr Islam while the others dispersed. During initial questioning, the detainee argued that his presence was strictly administrative, claiming he had arrived to deliver a finalised list of polling agents to the presiding officer for the following day’s proceedings.
Magistrate Palash Chandra Sarkar dismissed this defence, clarifying that electoral regulations provide no provision for the delivery of documents to a polling station in the dead of night. “There is a prescribed time and method for submitting agent lists; entering a secured centre at 10:00 pm is a clear violation of the law,” the Magistrate stated.

The detention has ignited a war of words between local political factions. Abdus Salam Tuhin, the Youth Secretary of Bogra City Jamaat, echoed the detainee’s claims, insisting the visit was purely procedural. However, he further alleged that the situation was manipulated by BNP activists, whom he accused of congregating at the school to incite a “mob-like atmosphere” and pressure the authorities into making an arrest.
As of Thursday morning, Nasirul Islam remains in custody. Authorities have secured a preliminary undertaking (muchleka) from him while senior officials deliberate on whether to file formal charges or impose further penalties. Security has been heightened across the Bogra-6 constituency to prevent any reprisal violence or further disruptions to the electoral process.
