Journalist Mozammel Babu has been officially shown as arrested in an extortion case filed at Banani Police Station. Subsequently, he has been sent to prison.
Court Proceedings and Arrest
On Sunday, 10 August, following a hearing at the office of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka, Ziadur Rahman, Mozammel Babu was presented before the court in the morning.
The investigating officer of the case and Sub-Inspector Rajuul Amin from Banani Police Station submitted a petition requesting the court to show the arrest of Mozammel Babu.
Around 11:40 am, Mozammel Babu was brought to court wearing a helmet and bulletproof jacket. The hearing then commenced in his presence.
Prosecution’s Allegations
Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon, the public prosecutor, stated during the hearing that under the military-backed government, a demand for extortion of 100 million Taka was made at the Baishakhi TV office under the leadership of the accused, Mozammel Babu.
He further alleged that an amount of 450,000 Taka in cash was taken.
The prosecutor prayed to the court for the official showing of Mozammel Babu’s arrest and requested that after his arrest, he be remanded for interrogation.
Court’s Decision and Detention
The court granted the request, officially showing the arrest and ordering Mozammel Babu to be sent to prison.
Following the order, police took him into custody at the court lock-up under heavy guard.
Background of Arrest
Mozammel Babu was originally arrested on 17 September last year at the Dhobaura border in Mymensingh. Since then, he has been detained in prison.
