Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are facing widespread criticism after their record signing, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, did not bowl in the team’s opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Acquired for a staggering ₹25.20 crore, Green is the most expensive overseas player in IPL history. However, questions over his non-utilisation with the ball have dominated discussions, especially following KKR’s defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI).
KKR, batting first at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, posted a competitive total of 220 runs. Yet, the target proved insufficient as Mumbai chased it down with six wickets remaining and five balls to spare. The match exposed a glaring lack of pace-bowling options for KKR, a shortfall made more conspicuous by Green not being called upon to bowl.
Green has been returning from a long-term injury. Cricket Australia (CA) has therefore restricted his bowling as a precautionary measure. During the recent Ashes series, Green bowled very few overs, and his involvement with the ball in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was minimal. Ahead of the IPL, speculation had circulated that Australia would not permit him to bowl in the tournament.
A CA spokesperson said: “Cameron has recovered from his back injury but requires approximately 10–12 more days before he can resume a full bowling workload in India. Kolkata Knight Riders are aware of this and have been in contact with us regarding his status.”
KKR opener Ajinkya Rahane commented after the Mumbai match: “When Green starts bowling, it could change our team combinations. Right now, we are assessing who can bowl effectively. We performed well with the bat, but balance in bowling is essential. We hope he begins bowling soon so we can evaluate the full team combination.” On being asked why Green did not bowl, Rahane deferred, saying the question should be directed to Cricket Australia.
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu criticised the CA’s cautious approach, saying on ESPN Cricinfo: “It is unreasonable to dictate what a player can or cannot do. If a player is fit and professional, they should be allowed to perform fully. The player should decide based on their capabilities.”
Former India spinner Piyush Chawla added: “If an all-rounder in the Big Bash League is limited in certain matches, they are unlikely to play. So why is such a restriction applied here? The decision should rest with the professional cricketer.”
