A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of young singer Abu Zahid, also known as Jahid Antu, in connection with a case filed by a student of Eden Mohila College alleging sexual harassment and assault. The order was issued on Wednesday (1 April) by Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat after hearing a petition submitted by the investigating officer.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to the profile of the accused and the seriousness of the allegations. According to court proceedings, Jahid Antu was produced before the court, where the investigation officer of Gulshan Police Station, Sub-Inspector KM Rashidur Rahman, sought an order to keep him in custody pending further investigation. The defence lawyer, however, submitted a bail petition and requested that the hearing be scheduled for the following day.
Prosecutor SI Tahmina Akter confirmed the development, stating that the court ultimately accepted the prosecution’s request and sent the accused to jail.
According to the complaint filed by the victim, an Eden College student, the accused first became acquainted with her last year at the Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) of the University of Dhaka during a guitar class. The interaction gradually developed into a romantic relationship between them. However, the complainant stated that the relationship later deteriorated, after which all communication between them ceased.
The victim further alleged that on 27 March, she received a WhatsApp message from the accused regarding a proposed product photo shoot at his residence. She was later invited to his home in Gulshan under that pretext.
On Tuesday evening, she reportedly went to his residence, where the alleged incident occurred. In her statement, the complainant accused Jahid Antu of sexually assaulting her without consent and of touching her inappropriately despite her refusal. When she resisted, she further alleged that she was physically assaulted, resulting in injuries to her face, neck, and head.
Following the incident, she managed to leave the premises and sought assistance from relatives before receiving initial medical treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital.
