A tense and emotionally charged incident in Madaripur has drawn widespread local attention after a young man began a hunger strike outside the residence of his alleged partner, demanding official recognition of their relationship and restoration of their union. Biswajit Patra alleges that he and Anushila Barai were in a romantic relationship for nearly a decade, which, according to him, eventually developed into marriage through court registration approximately four years ago.

He further claims that during the course of their relationship he provided financial support amounting to between 15 and 20 lakh taka, which he says was spent on his partner’s education and personal development.

According to his account, the relationship deteriorated after Anushila recently secured employment and subsequently ceased communication with him. He maintains that this abrupt break in contact forced him to stage a hunger strike outside her residence, demanding formal recognition of their alleged marriage and public acknowledgement of their relationship.

Eyewitnesses reported that he remained seated outside the property for extended periods, refusing food and water while calling for intervention from both families to resolve the dispute.

Counter-allegation of coercion and separation

Anushila Barai has firmly rejected his claims. While acknowledging that a relationship once existed, she has denied that any lawful marriage was entered into voluntarily.

She alleges that she was compelled to sign court marriage documents under pressure, disputing the validity of the claimed union. According to her, she issued a formal divorce notice approximately one week prior to the incident, thereby severing any remaining legal or personal ties.

She has further stated that she has no intention of reconciling or resuming any form of relationship with Biswajit Patra, adding that the matter should now be considered closed from her perspective.
