A legal notice has been issued to lifestyle brand Aarong, urging the company to immediately cease charging customers extra for shopping bags following purchases. The move comes in response to growing concerns that such charges violate consumer rights and undermine business ethics in Bangladesh.
The notice was sent on Sunday, 15 March 2026, by Saddam Hossain Obhi, a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. The registered communication was addressed to the Secretary of Commerce, the Director General of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department, and the Managing Director of Aarong.
The notice stipulates that if Aarong fails to take corrective action within 15 days of receipt, a writ petition may be filed in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in the public interest.
According to the notice, Aarong has, since 1 September 2025, been charging customers additional fees for shopping bags instead of providing them free of charge. The lawyer highlighted that no other business in Bangladesh engages in such practices, yet for several months, shoppers at Aarong outlets have been compelled to pay extra for carrying purchased items. Many customers have resorted to carrying their purchases in hand, prompting widespread criticism on social media.
Mr Obhi emphasised that the practice imposes both financial and psychological strain on consumers. Furthermore, it violates principles of business ethics and sets a potentially dangerous precedent, encouraging other brands in Bangladesh to adopt similar policies.
He urged that Aarong immediately discontinue the practice of charging for shopping bags, and that the Consumer Rights Protection Department investigate the matter thoroughly, taking necessary legal action against the company if violations are confirmed. The notice also calls for ensuring that all future customers receive free bags with their purchases, in line with consumer protection laws.
