Mali’s Prime Minister, Abdoulaye Maiga, on Friday accused Algeria at the United Nations of supporting “international terrorism” following the downing of a Malian army drone.
“We will not be bystanders to adversity. For every bullet fired against us, we shall respond in turn. For every ill word, we shall respond in turn,” said Maiga, an officer serving as prime minister under Mali’s military junta.
He further urged the Algerian leadership to cease backing terrorism and commit to promoting peace, in a speech delivered at the UN General Assembly: “We call on the Algerian junta to stop supporting international terrorism and to commit resolutely to promoting peace.”
The dispute centres on a Malian military drone shot down over the Sahara. Mali maintains the drone was operating within its airspace when it was downed. Algeria, however, denied this claim, stating the drone had crossed into Algerian territory.
In response, Mali filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice, a move labelled as “shameless” by Algerian officials.
Mali has been grappling with a prolonged security crisis since 2012, with large areas of the country vulnerable to criminal gangs and jihadist groups. The ongoing conflict has heightened tensions with neighbouring countries, including Algeria.
