The tranquil atmosphere of Mujibnagar Upazila in Meherpur was shattered on Tuesday night, 6 January, following the daring abduction of a local businessman’s son. The victim, identified as Mahid Hossain, was reportedly taken by unidentified miscreants who have since demanded a staggering ransom of BDT 30 lakh for his safe return.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 pm while Mahid, the son of pesticide trader Amir Uddin from Babupur village, was returning home from Komarpur market. He was accompanied by two friends, Riyad (son of Azizul) and Junaid (son of Elias), both residents of the same village.
As the trio reached a secluded stretch of road near Moshiur Rahman’s brick kiln in Komarpur, their path was suddenly obstructed by a group of masked assailants. The kidnappers forcibly dragged all three young men into a nearby open field. After a brief period of detention, the criminals released Riyad and Junaid, but held Mahid captive, spiriting him away to an unknown location.
Shortly after the abduction, the kidnappers contacted the victim’s family, issuing a chilling ultimatum: pay BDT 30 lakh or risk the young man’s life. The Hossain household is currently gripped by profound anxiety and terror, as they await further news regarding Mahid’s wellbeing.
Local residents have expressed growing concern over the brazen nature of the crime, noting that the area near the brick kiln is often poorly lit at night, making it a vulnerable spot for criminal activity.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mujibnagar Police Station, Jahidul Haque, visited the scene of the crime and the victim’s residence to gather preliminary evidence. He confirmed that law enforcement agencies have prioritised the case and are currently conducting raids across various suspected hideouts.
